Before my visit to Temecula, it was just a city on the map that I would pass through on my way to San Diego. I knew little about the rich history, and I definitely knew nothing about what this city has to offer those visiting. This mountainous valley house the Temecula Indians as far back as 900 A.D., and later became a settling point for white settlers in the 1800s. As you walk through Old Town Temecula you can definitely sense the history and imagine both the Indian settlers finding provision in all the terrain has to offer like plants, animals, and water, while also envisioning the stagecoaches rolling through and setting up frontier style villages. Make sure to check out the Temecula Museum for more on the rich history of this valley.
While my visit was intentionally for hot air ballooning, I was pleasantly surprised on how much there was to do during a day trip to Temecula. For starters, and the obvious activity, Temecula offers stunning hot air balloon rides throughout the Valley. I went with
A Grape Escape, an incredible team who spoiled me rotten and made for such a special first hot air balloon experience. I highly recommend giving them your business and if you wind up with the pilot Rusty, make sure to tell him I sent you his way! I mean, he won't remember me, but still, that would be cool! And while I do not drink alcohol, there are endless stunning vineyards to check out, which is what the valley is most known for.
As previously mentioned, Temecula's Old Town is full of quaint history and a definite must during your visit. There you will find a mile's worth of shops, eateries, and activities all nestled in the most adorable buildings. The style of Old Town is a mixture of French and Western, sure to capture your heart like it did mine. There you will find the
Old Town Temecula Community Theatre if you're into performing arts. If you're feeling extra adventurous, you can even check out the Psychic on the end of the street. My personal favorite part of Old Town was the ginormous antique shops. Honestly, those right on the strip were a little pricey. But literally one block behind the main strip you will find
Granny's Attic Antiques which was a never ending wear house crammed full of amazingly priced antiques. I loaded up at this place.
Since Temecula is only 40 minutes from my house, I made it into a day trip. However, if I were to stay the night, I would definitely want to check out
Hotel Palomar because it was right on the Old Town strip and had the cutest curb appeal. It too is full of rich history. Plus, you can rent out the entire little hotel for your whole group! I am all about supporting local businesses, so this would be my pick. If you end up staying here, let me know what you thought!
There were so many highly rated restaurants of all sorts. Diners. Cafes. Ice cream parlors. Delis. Bougie restaurants. You name it, Temecula has it. Not too mention the fine dining of the local Vineyards! I, however, chose
Swing Inn Cafe for a delicious breakfast after my hot air balloon ride. And let me tell you, it was mouth watering delicious and a place I will definitely return too. I sat at the adorable red bar and made a new friend which gave me the "small town" vibes.
